Tips to aid with transition

Congratulations on your new puppy and we thank you for choosing Puget Sound Doodles!

Current Food & Feeding Schedule

Your new puppy has been fed Victor Hi-Pro Plus dry kibble four times a day, at approximately 10% of their body weight. Maintaining this feeding schedule is important to support your pup’s growth and development during their critical growth spurts.
Victor Hi-Pro Plus is a high-quality kibble suitable for both puppies and adult dogs, making it an excellent choice for families who prefer to stick with one trusted brand throughout their dog’s life.
You can purchase Victor Hi-Pro Plus at feed stores or online through Amazon. See the link below for your convenience:

DIET GOING FORWARD
You are not required to continue feeding Victor Hi-Pro Plus, but we do recommend choosing a premium dog food. Premium brands typically offer higher nutritional quality compared to bargain options.
If you decide to switch your puppy’s food, it’s best to do so gradually by mixing the new kibble with the current food and slowly increasing the amount of the new food while fading out the old over several days. This helps prevent digestive upset.
As your puppy grows, be sure to follow the feeding guidelines on the packaging of your chosen dog food.
We also recommend providing your puppy with a daily vitamin and pre/probiotic supplement. Prebiotics and probiotics support healthy digestion and stool quality, especially during diet transitions.
For more information, check out the AKC’s Puppy Feeding Fundamentals page.

PARASITE MANAGEMENT

Talk with your veterinarian about parasite prevention and develop a proactive plan to protect your puppy from both internal and external parasites. Parasites are very common in puppies and can affect adult dogs as well!
Discuss your puppy’s activities—such as hiking, puppy playgroups, or daycare—with your vet to tailor the best parasite prevention plan. Work together to create a schedule for deworming, flea, tick, and lice treatments that will keep your puppy protected throughout their life.
Preventative care is the most effective defense against parasites. We also recommend blocking your puppy’s access to feces—try to prevent them from playing with, eating, or sniffing any feces. If contact does happen, wash your puppy immediately.
Be sure to sanitize your puppy’s food and water bowls daily, as these can also harbor parasites.
Below are links to example dewormers, flea, tick, and lice medications, along with helpful articles on parasite management for your reference.

PET INSURANCE
We highly recommend purchasing health insurance for your new puppy. Pet health insurance works much like human health insurance—it helps cover the costs of both routine preventative care and unexpected medical expenses.
There are many providers available, and prices can vary, so it’s a good idea to research options to find the best fit for your family. Some providers we’ve used and trust include Trupanion and the ASPCA.

MICROCHIPPING AND LICENSURE
We recommend investing in a microchip for your puppy. It provides added peace of mind and is a simple procedure your veterinarian can perform.
Additionally, check with your veterinarian or local animal control agency about pet licensure requirements, as some cities require pet licenses. We encourage all our families to obtain any necessary licenses to ensure compliance with local laws and promote responsible pet ownership.

TRAINING
At Puget Sound Doodles, we believe in the power of good old-fashioned dog walks and outdoor playtime! Bernedoodle puppies are intelligent and highly trainable, but we encourage you to think of your new pup like a toddler who’s just learning to crawl. Your puppy will be curious and unaware of potential dangers.
Common risky behaviors include chewing on inedible or harmful items (like shoes, electrical cords, toxic plants, or chemicals), darting into busy streets, falling from heights, or slipping into water. It is essential that your puppy is supervised at all times.
We recommend creating a safe puppy space, such as a playpen or a puppy-proofed room with a baby gate, and we strongly promote crate training. Remember, boredom often leads to unwanted behaviors, so a consistent exercise routine that includes outdoor walks and playtime supports your puppy’s physical health, emotional well-being, and good behavior.
