Congratulations on your new puppy and we thank you for choosing Puget Sound Doodles!
CURRENT FOOD & FEEDING SCHEDULE
Your new puppy has been fed Victor Hi-Pro Plus dry kibble four times per day at the rate of approximately 10% of his/her body weight. This feeding schedule should be maintained as to support your pups growth spurts. Victor Hi-Pro Plus is suitable for both pups as well as adult dogs and is therefore a good option for families seeking to stay with one name brand of kibble across the lifespan. Victor Hi-Pro Plus can be purchased a feed stores and at Amazon. See Amazon link below:

DIET GOING FORWARD
You are not obligated to continue feeding Victor Hi-Pro Plus but we do recommend using premium dog food. Premium dog foods generally maintain a higher nutritional density over bargain brands. If you choose to make a change, we recommend doing so gradually. You will want to mix the new kibble into the old and slowly fade out the old kibble over time. As your puppy grows, you will want to reference the feeding guidelines on the back of your selected dog food bag. We further recommend providing your puppy with a daily vitamin and pre/probiotic supplement. Pre/probiotics promote healthy stools and can be especially helpful during diet changes. PARASITE MANAGEMENT
Do talk with your veterinarian about parasite management and develop a proactive parasite management plan that addresses both internal and external parasites. Parasites are extremely common in puppies and adult dogs can have them too! Talk with your vet about the types of activities your puppy will be engaged in (e.g., hiking, shared puppy play spaces, puppy day care) and invest in preventative care. Also talk to your veterinarian about parasite management across the lifespan and formulate a deworming, flea and tick, and lice treatment schedule with guidance from your vet. Proactive and preventative care are your best defenses against parasites. We also recommend blocking your pups access to feces. Try your best to prevent your puppy from playing with, eating, or sniffing feces of any kind. In the event your puppy does come into contact with feces you will want to wash him/her immediately. Please also insure you are sanitizing your pups food and water bowls daily in that they too can harbor parasites. See links to example dewormers, flea, tick, and chewing lice medications below as well as informational articles on parasite management:

PET INSURANCE
We recommend purchasing health insurance for your new pup. Pet health insurance is very similar to health insurance for humans in that it serves to help offset the expenses associated with heath care; this can include both preventative as well as unforeseen health care expenses. There are many different health insurance providers and price points can vary so some research may be required. Providers we have used and are familiar with include Trupanion and the ASPCA.
MICROCHIPPING AND LICENSURE
We recommend investing in a microchip for your puppy. It will provide you with added piece of mind and it is an easy procedure your veterinarian can assist with. We further recommend inquiring with your veterinarian and or local animal control agency about pet licensure requirements. Some cities do require you purchase a pet license. We encourage our families to purchase the pet license are required by law as to insure compliance and responsible pet ownership.
TRAINING
Here at Puget Sound Doodles we believe in good old fashion dog walks and outdoor puppy play! Bernedoodle pups are both very smart and highly trainable. We, however, encourage you to think of your new pup as similar to a toddler that has just learned to crawl. Your new pup will be curious and he/she does not have a good concept of danger. Typical behaviors pups engage in that can quickly turn dangerous include but are not limited to: chewing inedible items (e.g., shoes, electrical cords, toxic plants, chemicals), running across busy streets, falling from dangerous elevations, falling into bodies of water. It is your responsibility to insure your puppy is supervised at all times. We recommend creating a puppy safe space such as a playpen or puppy proof room enclosed with a baby gate and we promote crate training. Please also keep in mind that boredom will often lead to inappropriate pup behavior. An exercise schedule that includes outdoor walks and playtime will help promote good physical and emotional well being as well as desired puppy behavior.
